Here in the Greater Wellington wine region, we’re a little bit different…and we like it that way.
Sure, we have the rolling hills, lush green vines, and all the boutique vineyards and premium wine and all the other cliches you would expect to find in a wine region. But….we are much (much!) more than that. And it’s time we celebrate that!
Just an hour or so over the hill from Wellington, is the Wairarapa region, which is made up of the three sub-regions that produce the most distinguished wine of New Zealand – Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton – all connected by the Ruamahanga river which weaves its way through our wine country.
Our region is home to some of New Zealand’s most well-known brands, and many of our wine producers export all around the world. We are most recognised for our food friendly, wellstructured and sophisticated Pinot Noir.
In fact, Masterton was the first region in New Zealand to produce pinot noir in1883, and the story of our ‘four founding fathers’ as they are known, is often told. Our region is rich in history, tradition and legend. In other words, we have all the prerequisites for a great wine region…But we also have many more stories to tell…. And that’s what Wellington Wine Country is here to do.
