The greater Wairarapa winegrowing region has a very strong bond with Wellington city. Many of the Wairarapa’s winegrowers originate from Wellington, and most of the wines from the district are sold in Wellington. It’s the natural order of things.
It has been some time in the forming, but ‘Wellington Wine Country’ has been established. This is the new marketing arm for ‘Wairarapa Winegrowers’, the combination of the existing ‘Wairarapa Wines and ‘Wines from Martinborough’ organisations. Wellington Wine Country will be responsible for the marketing of winegrowers in Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton.
Wairarapa winemakers are leveraging on the success of the Wellington brand to showcase their wines to the world. They have formed Wellington Wine Country Limited (WWCL) to streamline marketing for all wine producers in the Greater Wellington region. WWCL chairwoman Nicola Belsham, from Murdoch James Estate Wines, said internationally, few understood where Wairarapa was situated, and that it was made up of three sub-regions - Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton.
